The prototype YAH-64 was first flown on September 30, 1975. After purchasing Hughes Helicopters in 1984, McDonnell Douglas continued AH-64 production and development.
Takingjust the Zulu against all AH-64 production that ever happened since the 1970s is an unequal contest. AH-1 and AH-64 total production numbers are remarkably similar. I believe the AH-1 has sold in larger numbers as export than the AH-64 has, although AH-64 probably wins in dollar value due to its much greater expense.

Comparedto the Z-Cobra Apache has a better gun, better payload capacity, better loiter time, more armor/better survivability, better computer/electronics package. Secondhand info here, but a buddy who'd flown both also said the -64's MTADS sighting systems smoked what the -1Z was fielding at the time. Can't confirm personally.
